IIUG, two new Informix blogs, and baseball

The International Informix User Group (IIUG) conference ended on Wednesday, followed by a well attended Customer Advisory Council meeting on Thursday.

It was a good conference and I'm looking forward to being able to download the conference material from the website. As usual I didn't make it to many sessions except ones I had to moderate. This at least enabled me to catch up on the work Informix has been doing with VMware on performance best practices in a presentation by Sreeni Paidi from IBM and Robert Campbell, a VMware technologist.

IIUG 2010: Wednesday

The day started with a Q&A with IBM excutives: Alys Passarelli, Inhi Cho Suh and Rob Thomas. There were a number of good questions and it was an opportunity for the excutives to state their commitment to Informix and describe many of the efforts in progress.

Once again, a good mix of sessions on subjects from customer case studies, database administration, security, best practices, and use of tools such as Eclipse.

The day ended at 4:30 after the delivery of 25 sessions.

This was a great conference with lots of good information and fantatic networking.

dbdelete in python

At the 2010 IIUG Informix conference Nick Geib from IBM and I did a technical session on python and Informix. One of the examples we gave of how an Informix DBA can leverage python to make his or her life easier was a dbdelete utility, a simple python script that can be used to delete a large amount of data without causing a long transaction, excessive locks and can run some onstats during the delete to determine if we should stop deleting for a little while because it is impacting performance.
